JENNE CURRIE + TRACY PHILLIPS

Working with paint and wood, two artists, Jenne Currie and Tracy Phillips, forge forms while structuring artworks that invite space and being.

By its nature, painting is a deceptive art. It seeks to represent three dimensions with only two planes. The perceptual shifts between three and two dimensions creates the optical illusion that brings art to life.

Jenne Currie’s paintings balance sculptural space against the limits of the two-dimensional substrate. The shadows made by the suspended shapes are influenced by shifting ambient light. These ever-changing silhouettes allow the passage of time and its accompanying shadows to serve as a painterly component alongside pigments and medium.

On the other hand, Tracy Phillips straddles a space that shifts between within and without while her colors illuminate deep passageways. Phillips' brushwork describes naturalistic light effects on configurations balancing on the cusp of the known and unknowable. The perceived sensation is of a world originating somewhere inside the viewer and then traversing beyond into more obscure realms.
